Rugged Tours ----> Inner Mongolian Naadam Festival

naadamFactsNaadam is ethnic Mongolian’s annual celebration held in the vast Grassland expanses of Inner Mongolia, China, it is a huge get together wrestlersfor the nomadic culture. During the festival monks gather and offer sacrifices to Buddha and their ancestors, whilst other Mongolians hold wrestling competitions, race horses and compete at archery. Naadam means ‘the three games of men’ in Mongolian.

The destination of the trip will be at Gegentala Grassland, which is 140km away from Hohhot, the capital city of Inner Mongolian, and where the annual Naadam festival will be held. Gegentala Grassland is also the place where the Chinese taikonaut landed. This trip will provide people an opportunity to learn about the Mongolian ethnic cultures and experience the Naadam festival.

The first stop of the trip will be at Hohhot, there you will have the chance to visit the famous Dazhao lamasery. Built in 1579 it has an astounding 2.5 meter tall silver Sakyamuni buddha statue as one of its many treasures.

From Hohhot we will take a coach over the Da Qing Mountains through Siziwang Banner into the wide expanses of the Gegentala Grassland. After a night’s rest in a traditional Mongolian Yurt, yurtsyou will attend the opening ceremony of the Naadam festival where Mongolians from different regions and areas will gather together to provide entertainment. After the ceremony, you can go watch wrestling matches, horse racing and horseback performances. At sunset you can gather around the bonfires with your friends to enjoy the exotic Mongolia singing and dancing performances.

The next day you can choose to hike or ride a horse up the hill to attend the Aobao ceremony, which is the Mongolian sacrifice ritual. aobaoAobao means pile of stone in Mongolian, it is the symbol of the nomads’ temple. Every year, the Mongolians provide roast lamb and other traditional Mongolian food as their sacrifices to their ancestors and god praying for a following good year while the lamas chanting prays in Mongolian.

More wrestling and horse racing later, you may visit local Mongolian people and eat authentic and tasty Mongolian meals with friends. Don’t forget to try the roasted whole lamb and Mongolian yogurt lamb dumplings while you visit as the deliciously succulent meat available in this region is like no other. There are also a wide range of activities to stumble across like archery, horse riding and even flying a jet. There are more which I shall leave to you to discover yourself while you on the journey. Whatever you do, you can be sure to enjoy the tranquil starry nights of the grassland with your friends

Hohhot has one international airport, Hohhot Baita Inernational Airport (meaning White Pagoda airport). It is named after a historical White Pagoda (map) site (Wanbu huayanjing Pagoda from the Liao dynasty between 916-1120 years) located 5.6km southeast of the airport. Baita Airport was first built in 1958, however, it only officially starts airing since 31 March 1992. Baita Airport is 10km east of Hohhot city centre. It was also served as one of the diversion airports for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

There are a couple of shops in the airport for souvenirs and snacks and an internet cafe priced at 50 kuai for as long as you want.

From/to the Airport:

There are three ways to get to and from the airport:

  1. Taxi: get a print out of your hotel address in Chinese and get on a taxi ride, which usually takes about 20-30 minutes and 30-40kuai from the city centre.
  2. Airport shuttle bus: the shuttle bus starts from Xinhua Square (map) in the city, it sets off from the Air Ticket Office in Xinhua Square every 90 minutes before a flight takes off. You can get the ticket from Xinhua Square, and the ticket costs 5kuai each.
  3. Public Bus No. 12: This public bus runs through 15 stops including Baita Airport in Hohhot, you can find all the No. 12 bus stops here on the map.

From Hohhot to Gegentala Grassland

  1. Coach/Mini-van service: we have coach/mini-van service between Hohhot and Gegentala Grassland. It is about 3 hours journey up and down the Daqing Mountain and across the Wulanhua Town in Siziwangqi Banner.
  2. Public Coach: You can also get the public coaches from Hohhot to Wulanhua Town, it costs 30kuai per person and about 2 and half hour journey. Then you need to hire another car or coach from Wulanhua Town to go to the Gegentala Grassland.

ATM Machines:

most of the ATM machines outside major Chinese banks (such as Banks of China, Bank of Communications, China Construction Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China) support international bank cards (Visa, Master)

There is one ATM machine that supports international bank card in the entrance hall of Holiday Inn (map), just across the road from Yingshanhongyun Hotel. There is no banks or ATM machine on the Gegentala Grassland.

Things to do in Gegentala:

  • Horse riding (ranged from 50-200kuai depending on the route you are taking)
  • Archery
  • Take a flying journey over the vast steppe on the local microlight (200RMB per ride)
  • Visit local Mongolian family and have a meal in their yurts, try the local dairy selection.
  • Attend the bonfire party at night
  • Watch sun set or rise on the grassland and counting the stars through your yurt roof window.
  • Chilling out in the only bar there - Milk Tea Bag (beers ranged from 25-30RMB)
  • Do a bit souvenir shopping in the tourist shops.
